Standard reference

BS 10 Flanges

BS 10 flange enquiries must state the applicable table as well as the nominal size. A table designation is not interchangeable with an ASME class or a PN label.

Table-based identification

The table is an essential part of the flange designation. Obtain it from the project specification or original drawing along with the flange material and construction. Matching only the nominal size leaves drilling, thickness and other interface requirements unresolved.

Physical fit is not a rating assessment

Verify the flange and mating component dimensions under the required edition. A flange that can be bolted to another component is not thereby suitable for its operating conditions. Review pressure, temperature, material and gasket loading under the applicable design basis.

Replacement work

Record the existing flange dimensions, facing, pipe connection and any site modifications. Resolve missing or conflicting information through the engineering specification. Do not relabel a table flange as PN or ASME Class solely to simplify ordering.

Selection reference only. Offered scope, technical compliance and availability are confirmed against the complete project enquiry.

Standard scope and ordering designation

Use BS 10 only within its applicable scope. Obtain numerical dimensions and rating tables from the governing standard and the approved project documentation.

ScopeBS 10 flange enquiries must state the applicable table as well as the nominal size. A table designation is not interchangeable with an ASME class or a PN label.Check size, material and component scope before applying any table.
Dimensional designationNominal size, series/type, rating designation and dimensional units.Matching nominal size does not prove matching bolt circle, thickness or facing.
Material-dependent ratingMaterial group, design temperature and any standard-specific rating rules.Do not read a class number as a direct pressure limit or transfer ratings between materials.
Related requirementsGaskets, fasteners, attachment welds and the project piping/equipment code. The flange standard does not replace complete assembly design or installation requirements.
Legacy or alternate designationsExisting drawing number, original standard and proposed replacement designation.Verify dimensions and suitability rather than assuming historical names are equivalent.

Inspection, documents and delivery

Define acceptance requirements for BS 10 Flanges in the purchase order. Required examinations and documents depend on the material, design and project specification.

BS 10 Flanges: inspection, documents and delivery
Review stageInformation to confirmOrder requirement
Material identity and traceabilitySpecification, grade, heat/lot identification and the required material certificate.Agree documentation and marking before manufacture; visual appearance cannot verify alloy identity.
Dimensional verificationCritical dimensions from the selected standard or controlled drawing.Identify inspection points, tolerances, units and drawing revision.
Surface and end conditionGasket-contact surface, attachment end, edges and any coating exclusions.State finish and visual acceptance criteria; agree protection of machined surfaces.
Supplementary examinationsAny specified PMI, NDE, hardness, impact, corrosion or other tests.Define the method, sampling and acceptance criteria; tests are not automatically included.
Assembly compatibilityAdjoining components, weld or mechanical interface and project service conditions.Design approval and correct assembly remain separate from a dimensional inspection report.
Packing and order releaseQuantity, identification, surface protection, documents and delivery destination.Agree preservation, packaging and release requirements with the order.
