Material selection

Alloy / Chrome Moly Steel Flanges

Chrome-moly flange enquiries require the exact alloy grade and heat-treatment condition, especially where elevated temperature and welding govern the design.

Grade-specific elevated-temperature design

Chrome-moly grades do not share one allowable temperature or pressure envelope. The required composition, product specification and heat treatment must align with the piping design. A broad description such as alloy steel is insufficient for procurement or substitution.

Welding and heat treatment

Review the flange-to-pipe weld with the specified base materials, consumables and weld procedure. Preheat, post-weld heat treatment and hardness requirements depend on the grade, code and project. They should be defined before manufacture rather than inferred from a familiar grade name.

Verification and service history

For replacement work, obtain the existing component designation and available material records. Positive material identification can support alloy verification but does not replace all mechanical, heat-treatment or traceability requirements. Agree the inspection scope and acceptance criteria explicitly.

Selection reference only. Offered scope, technical compliance and availability are confirmed against the complete project enquiry.

Material designations and distinctions

Reference designations for Alloy / Chrome Moly Steel Flanges. These are not an availability list or an equivalence table. A trade name, UNS number and ASTM product specification have different roles.

Inspection, documents and delivery

Define acceptance requirements for Alloy / Chrome Moly Steel Flanges in the purchase order. Required examinations and documents depend on the material, design and project specification.

Material identity and traceabilitySpecification, grade, heat/lot identification and the required material certificate.Agree documentation and marking before manufacture; visual appearance cannot verify alloy identity.
Dimensional verificationThe selected flange form, bore, thickness, bolt pattern and mating geometry.Identify inspection points, tolerances, units and drawing revision.
Surface and end conditionGasket-contact surface, attachment end, edges and any coating exclusions.State finish and visual acceptance criteria; agree protection of machined surfaces.
Supplementary examinationsAny specified PMI, NDE, hardness, impact, corrosion or other tests.Define the method, sampling and acceptance criteria; tests are not automatically included.
